Why 48 amps and not more

The onboard charger dictates your charging speed, not the size of the supply. Feeding forty-eight amps to the Long Range variant restores forty-six miles of range per hour. Hooking this car to a sixty-amp breaker fills the battery in seven point seven hours. Pumping more power past forty-eight amps does nothing because the onboard hardware caps the intake. Going smaller means longer overnight waits.
