What home charger does the BMW iX need?
| Model years | Trims | Charger | Breaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022-2026 | all trims | 48 A | 60 A |
The BMW iX takes a 48 A home charger on a 60 A breaker. That holds for every iX from 2022 through 2026, because each one accepts 11.0 kW.
Why 48 amps and not more
Plenty of owners buy the biggest unit on the shelf expecting a faster car, and the iX ignores the extra. Anything bigger than 48 A is wasted on it. Anything smaller costs time: a 2026 iX on a 40 A charger adds 22 to 27 miles of range per hour, where a 48 A unit manages 26 to 32.
Charging time by model year
| Year | EPA range | Level 2, miles per hour | Level 2, empty to full | 120 V, miles per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 279 to 364 mi | 26 to 32 | 10.2 to 11.6 h | 3.4 to 4.1 |
| 2025 | 211 to 309 mi | 25 to 29 | 7.7 to 11.4 h | 3.3 to 3.7 |
| 2024 | 217 to 307 mi | 26 to 28 | 7.8 to 11.4 h | 3.4 to 3.7 |
| 2023 | 274 to 324 mi | 25 to 28 | 11.4 to 11.5 h | 3.3 to 3.7 |
| 2022 | 305 to 324 mi | 28 | 11.5 h | 3.7 |
Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.
Charge times vary more than the charger does. Depending on year and battery, an iX needs anywhere from 7.7 to 11.6 hours to fill from empty, and the 2026 versions with up to 364 miles of range sit at the slow end. The original 2022 car, with up to 324 miles, takes about 11.5 hours.
What the install involves
Keep the cable run short if you can. The farther the charger sits from the panel, the more copper the circuit needs, and heavy wire for a 60 A breaker is not cheap. A garage wall that backs onto the panel is ideal. If the panel is tight, most chargers can be set to a lower current and still refill an iX overnight on a typical day.
- 48 A charger: 60 A breaker, hardwired, because no household receptacle is rated for a 48 A charger.
- Charge port, 2022-2024: J1772. Every non-Tesla EV sold in North America through 2024 uses the J1772 connector for AC Level 2 charging.
- Charge port, 2025-2026: J1772. From 2025 the industry is moving to the NACS port, and makers switch at different times. Some of these cars have a J1772 port and some have NACS with an adapter, so look at the port on your own car before choosing a charger's plug.
Chargers that fit the BMW iX
Smallest adequate unit first. Every amp above what the car accepts is capacity it never uses.
Energy monitoring built in. Hardwire it for the full 48 A.
Compact unit, good for tight garages.
Adjustable from 16 A to 50 A in the app, which helps if your panel is tight.

Common questions
- Does a used 2022 BMW iX need a different charger?
- No. The 2022 iX accepts 48 A like every later year.
- Can a BMW iX charge from an existing NEMA 14-50 outlet?
- With a 40 A charger on a 50 A breaker, yes. A 48 A charger must be hardwired.
- What charge port does the BMW iX use?
- J1772 for AC on the 2022 to 2024 cars. From 2025, check your own car, since some makers are moving to NACS.
- How much range does a 120 V outlet add to a BMW iX?
- About 3.3 to 4.1 miles per hour.
