What home charger does the Honda Clarity EV need?

What to buy
A 32 A charger on a 40 A circuit
The 2019 Honda Clarity EV accepts at most 6.6 kW (32 A) of AC power, whatever the trim. A bigger charger will not charge it any faster.

The 2019 Honda Clarity EV needs no more than a 32 A charger on a 40 A breaker. Its onboard charger accepts 6.6 kW, and a 32 A unit covers that with room to spare.

Why 32 amps and not more

With 89 miles of range, the Clarity fills fast on almost anything. A 32 A unit adds 22 miles of range per hour and fills an empty battery in about 4 hours. A 24 A unit on a 30 A circuit adds 16 per hour, and anything bigger than 32 A adds nothing at all.

Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.

Honda sold the Clarity EV in small numbers, mostly as a lease in California and Oregon, so most you will find now are used. Every trim shares the same 6.6 kW charger.

What the install involves

This is an easy install. A 32 A charger can plug into a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 40 A breaker, or be hardwired. A NEMA 6-30 outlet on a 30 A breaker also works if you use a 24 A charger.

Chargers that fit the Honda Clarity EV

Smallest adequate unit first. Every amp above what the car accepts is capacity it never uses.

No home unit in this list is built at exactly 32 A, so these are the smallest that cover it. The car draws only what it can take.
