What home charger does the Audi Q8 e-tron and e-tron need?

What to buy, 2019-2025
A 48 A charger on a 60 A circuit
Every Audi Q8 e-tron and e-tron from 2019 to 2025 accepts at most 11.0 kW (48 A) of AC power, whatever the trim. A bigger charger will not charge it any faster.

Audi renamed the e-tron the Q8 e-tron for 2024, but the home charging answer stayed put: a 48 A charger on a 60 A breaker. Every year from 2019 to 2025 accepts 11.0 kW.

Why 48 amps and not more

The car decides how much current it takes, and it stops at 48 A. A larger charger adds cost and nothing else. A smaller one slows things down: a 2025 Q8 e-tron on a 40 A unit adds 19 to 21 miles of range per hour instead of 23 to 25.

Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.

What changed along the way was the battery. A 2019 e-tron fills from empty in about 8.5 hours, the 2020 to 2023 cars in 8.7 to 8.8 hours, and the 2024 and 2025 cars in 10.5 to 10.7 hours. Range climbed too, to as much as 300 miles in 2024.

What the install involves

Mount the charger where the cable reaches the charge door with slack left over, and measure for the way you actually park. The circuit is a 60 A breaker with the charger hardwired, since a 48 A load is more than any standard receptacle is rated for.

Common questions

Does a 2019 Audi e-tron need a different charger from a 2025 Q8 e-tron?
No. Both take 48 A, so the same charger fits either car.
Can the Audi Q8 e-tron use a 40 A charger on a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
Yes, with a 50 A breaker. It adds 19 to 21 miles of range per hour on a 2025 instead of 23 to 25.
How much does a 120 V outlet add to an Audi Q8 e-tron?
Between 3 and 3.7 miles of range per hour depending on the year. It's a backup, not a plan.
Is a permit needed to install a charger for an Audi Q8 e-tron?
In most places, yes. The new 240 V circuit usually needs a permit and an inspection.
