What home charger does the Hyundai Kona Electric need?

What to buy, 2019-2025
32 A or 48 A, depending on model year
Not every Hyundai Kona Electric has the same onboard charger. Find yours in the table. A smaller one gains nothing from a bigger wall unit.

It depends on the generation. A 2019 to 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric has a 7.2 kW onboard charger and needs a 32 A charger on a 40 A breaker. The redesigned 2024 and 2025 Kona Electric accepts 11.0 kW and takes 48 A on a 60 A breaker.

Why the amperage matters

On the older car, anything above 32 A is wasted. On the newer one, a 48 A unit earns its place: a 2025 adds 38 miles of range per hour at 48 A and 32 on a 40 A charger.

Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.

The first-generation Kona Electric had 258 miles of range and took 9.7 to 10 hours to fill from empty. The second generation added the faster charger, so a full charge takes 6.9 hours even though range tops out at 261 miles.

What the install involves

Check the panel before choosing. A 32 A charger on a 40 A breaker is a modest load and can plug into a NEMA 14-50 outlet. A 48 A charger on a 60 A breaker is heavier and must be hardwired. A load calculation tells you whether the bigger circuit fits.

Smallest adequate unit first. Every amp above what the car accepts is capacity it never uses.

Common questions

Does a used 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric need a different charger from a 2025?
It only needs 32 A, while the 2025 takes 48 A. A 48 A charger works for both, but the 2021 won't charge any faster on it.
How long does a Hyundai Kona Electric take to charge from empty?
About 9.7 to 10 hours for a 2019 to 2023 car and 6.9 hours for a 2024 or 2025.
Is a 40 A charger fine for a 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric?
Yes, on a 50 A breaker. It adds 32 miles of range per hour instead of 38.
How much does a 120 V outlet add to a Hyundai Kona Electric?
About 5 to 5.3 miles of range per hour.
