What home charger does the Kia Niro EV need?

What to buy, 2019-2026
32 A or 48 A, depending on model year
Not every Kia Niro EV has the same onboard charger. Find yours in the table. A smaller one gains nothing from a bigger wall unit.

The Kia Niro EV changed chargers with its redesign. A 2019 to 2022 car accepts 7.2 kW and needs a 32 A charger on a 40 A breaker. A 2023 to 2026 car accepts 11.0 kW and takes 48 A on a 60 A breaker.

Why the amperage matters

A 48 A charger won't make an older Niro charge faster, because that car stops at 32 A. On a newer Niro the 48 A unit is worth it: a 2026 adds 37 miles of range per hour at 48 A and 31 on a 40 A charger.

Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.

The difference between generations is large. A 2019 to 2022 Niro EV adds 24 miles of range per hour and needs 10 hours from empty. A 2023 or later car adds 37 to 38 miles per hour and fills in 6.7 to 6.9 hours, with range up from 239 to 253 miles.

What the install involves

For an older Niro, a 32 A charger plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 40 A breaker is an easy install. For a newer one, the 48 A charger must be hardwired to a 60 A breaker. Have the panel checked before committing to the larger circuit.

Common questions

Does a used 2021 Kia Niro EV need a different charger from a 2024?
It only uses 32 A, while the 2024 uses 48 A. A 48 A charger fits both, but the 2021 charges no faster on it.
How long does a Kia Niro EV take to charge from empty?
About 10 hours for a 2019 to 2022 car and 6.7 to 6.9 hours for a 2023 or later.
Can a Kia Niro EV use a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
Yes. An older Niro works well with a 32 A plug-in charger, and a newer one with a 40 A plug-in unit on a 50 A breaker.
How much does a 120 V outlet add to a Kia Niro EV?
About 4.8 to 5 miles of range per hour.
