What home charger does the Polestar 2 need?

What to buy, 2021-2025
A 48 A charger on a 60 A circuit
Every Polestar 2 from 2021 to 2025 accepts at most 11.0 kW (48 A) of AC power, whatever the trim. A bigger charger will not charge it any faster.

Why 48 amps and not more

The car caps AC charging at 11.0 kW, so a charger above 48 A is wasted. A 40 A charger costs some speed, bringing a 2025 from 30 to 37 miles of range per hour down to 25 to 31. For most commutes that slower rate still refills the day's driving overnight.

2025254 to 314 mi30 to 378.5 h3.9 to 4.9
2024247 to 320 mi31 to 387.9 to 8.5 h4.1 to 4.9
2023247 to 270 mi31 to 357.7 to 8 h4 to 4.6

2021233 mi307.8 h3.9

Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.

The Polestar 2 got more range over the years, from 233 miles in 2021 to as much as 320 in 2024, while the charger stayed the same. Full charges take 7.7 to 8.5 hours from empty, so a used early car and a new one need the same equipment.

What the install involves

Expect a permit and an inspection for a new 240 V circuit. The electrician will fit a 60 A breaker and hardwire the charger, because no household receptacle is rated for a 48 A load. If the panel is short on room, a 40 A charger on a NEMA 14-50 outlet and a 50 A breaker is the usual fallback.

Common questions

Does a used 2021 Polestar 2 need a different charger from a 2025?
No. Every year accepts 11.0 kW, so the same 48 A charger fits.
How long does a Polestar 2 take to charge from empty?
About 7.7 to 8.5 hours on a 48 A charger.
Can a Polestar 2 use a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
Yes, through a 40 A charger on a 50 A breaker. A 48 A charger must be hardwired.
What charge port does the Polestar 2 use?
The 2021 to 2024 cars use J1772. For 2025, check your own car, since makers are moving to NACS at different times.
