What home charger does the Rivian R1T need?
| Model years | Trims | Charger | Breaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022-2027 | all trims | 48 A | 60 A |
Every Rivian R1T from 2022 through 2027 takes a 48 A charger on a 60 A breaker. The truck's onboard charger accepts 11.5 kW on AC.
Why 48 amps and not more
A pickup with a battery this size charges slowly at home no matter what. At 48 A a 2027 R1T adds 30 miles of range per hour, and a 40 A charger brings that to 25. Buying a charger above 48 A won't help, because the truck limits its own draw. Plugging in every night keeps that from becoming a problem.
Charging time by model year
| Year | EPA range | Level 2, miles per hour | Level 2, empty to full | 120 V, miles per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 | 289 to 420 mi | 30 | 14.2 h | 3.7 |
| 2026 | 258 to 420 mi | 30 | 14.2 h | 3.7 |
| 2025 | 258 to 420 mi | 30 | 14.2 h | 3.7 |
| 2024 | 255 to 410 mi | 22 to 29 | 12.4 to 14.2 h | 2.8 to 3.6 |
| 2023 | 289 to 352 mi | 27 | 13.2 h | 3.3 |
| 2022 | 314 mi | 24 | 13.1 h | 3 |
Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.
The R1T's big battery means long charges. From 2025 to 2027 a full charge from empty takes about 14.2 hours, with up to 420 miles of range. The 2022 truck took 13.1 hours, and 2024 versions range from 12.4 to 14.2 hours. A used 2022 truck needs the same equipment as a new one.
What the install involves
Think about where the truck parks. The charge port is on the driver's side front, so a charger on the wall near that corner keeps the cable run short. The circuit is a 60 A breaker with the charger hardwired, since no standard receptacle is rated for 48 A.
- 48 A charger: 60 A breaker, hardwired, because no household receptacle is rated for a 48 A charger.
- Charge port, 2022-2024: J1772. Every non-Tesla EV sold in North America through 2024 uses the J1772 connector for AC Level 2 charging.
- Charge port, 2025-2027: J1772. From 2025 the industry is moving to the NACS port, and makers switch at different times. Some of these cars have a J1772 port and some have NACS with an adapter, so look at the port on your own car before choosing a charger's plug.
