What home charger does the Volvo EC40 and C40 Recharge need?
| Model years | Trims | Charger | Breaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022-2026 | all trims | 48 A | 60 A |
Volvo renamed the C40 Recharge the EC40, and both take a 48 A charger on a 60 A breaker. Every model year from 2022 to 2026 accepts 11.0 kW on AC.
Why 48 amps and not more
The coupe-roofed crossover limits its own intake, so a charger above 48 A adds nothing. A 40 A charger costs a 2026 EC40 some speed, bringing it from 32 to 35 miles of range per hour down to 27 to 29. On a typical commute, either size puts the day's driving back overnight.
Charging time by model year
| Year | EPA range | Level 2, miles per hour | Level 2, empty to full | 120 V, miles per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 268 to 298 mi | 32 to 35 | 8.5 to 8.6 h | 4.1 to 4.5 |
| 2025 | 268 to 298 mi | 32 to 35 | 8.5 to 8.6 h | 4.1 to 4.5 |
| 2024 | 257 to 297 mi | 32 to 35 | 8 to 8.5 h | 4.2 to 4.6 |
| 2023 | 226 mi | 29 | 7.9 h | 3.7 |
| 2022 | 226 mi | 29 | 7.9 h | 3.7 |
Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.
The early cars had 226 miles of range and filled from empty in 7.9 hours. From 2024 on, range rose to as much as 298 miles, and full charges take 8 to 8.6 hours. The charger itself never changed, so a used C40 Recharge needs the same equipment as a new EC40.
What the install involves
Hardwire the charger to a 60 A breaker, since no household receptacle is rated for 48 A. A hardwired unit also sidesteps the slow wear a plug suffers from heating and cooling every night. If the panel is tight, most chargers can be set to a lower current.
- 48 A charger: 60 A breaker, hardwired, because no household receptacle is rated for a 48 A charger.
- Charge port, 2022-2024: J1772. Every non-Tesla EV sold in North America through 2024 uses the J1772 connector for AC Level 2 charging.
- Charge port, 2025-2026: J1772. From 2025 the industry is moving to the NACS port, and makers switch at different times. Some of these cars have a J1772 port and some have NACS with an adapter, so look at the port on your own car before choosing a charger's plug.
