What home charger does the Volvo EX40 and XC40 Recharge need?

What to buy, 2021-2026
A 48 A charger on a 60 A circuit
Every Volvo EX40 and XC40 Recharge from 2021 to 2026 accepts at most 11.0 kW (48 A) of AC power, whatever the trim. A bigger charger will not charge it any faster.

Why 48 amps and not more

The car limits its own intake, so a charger above 48 A buys nothing. A 40 A charger costs a 2026 EX40 some speed, from 31 to 35 miles of range per hour down to 26 to 29. For a typical commute, either size refills the battery overnight.

Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.

What changed over the years was range and efficiency. The 2021 XC40 Recharge had 208 miles of range and added 26 miles per hour of charging, while the 2026 EX40 reaches 296 miles and adds up to 35. Every year fills from empty in 8 to 8.5 hours.

What the install involves

Check the panel before buying. A 60 A circuit is a large load, and a load calculation shows whether the service can carry it. If it can't, the charger can be set to a lower current. The unit is hardwired, since no household receptacle is rated for 48 A. A permit and an inspection are normal for the new circuit.
